Celebrating Duke’s First Year: Homemade Peanut Butter-Bacon Dog Treats
Today marks a truly special occasion in our household: Duke’s first birthday! It feels like just yesterday we welcomed that tiny, fluffy 7-pound puppy into our lives, and now, 10 short months later, he’s grown into a magnificent, energetic, and endlessly lovable member of our family. This milestone calls for a celebration, and what better way to honor our four-legged friend than with a batch of irresistible homemade dog treats?

From Tiny Pup to Fearless Leader: Duke’s Unforgettable Journey
The journey from a small, uncertain puppy to the confident dog Duke is today has been nothing short of amazing. It’s hard to believe he’s already a year old, and in that time, he has truly carved out his own unique personality and role within our home. Comparing him to our older dog, Einstein, highlights just how distinct and wonderful Duke’s character has become.

While Einstein is perfectly content to follow the lead, Duke inherently loves to be in charge. He’s the first to explore new areas of the yard, the one who initiates playtime, and the dog who confidently struts ahead on walks, surveying his domain. This leadership quality, though sometimes expressed through playful bossiness with his older brother, is a testament to his burgeoning confidence and spirit.
Their approaches to food also couldn’t be more different. Einstein, bless his heart, is a true foodie; he would happily “relieve” you of your last bite without a second thought. Duke, on the other hand, is surprisingly nonchalant about food. While he enjoys his meals, he’s not the type to beg or steal. This unique trait made his reaction to his birthday treats even more special, as you’ll soon discover.
One of Duke’s more endearing quirks is his “fearful gene.” He can be quite wary of unfamiliar objects – a new vacuum cleaner, an umbrella that suddenly appears, or anything that wasn’t previously a fixture in its spot can send him into a cautious, sometimes comical, retreat. Einstein, conversely, embodies the “go with the flow” mentality, unfazed by sudden changes. Thankfully, despite their differences, both dogs share a calm demeanor during thunderstorms, which is a huge relief!
When it comes to playtime, their styles diverge once again. Einstein absolutely adores chasing tennis balls, but his game often ends with him happily trotting off with his prize, never to return it. Duke, however, grasped the concept of “fetch” remarkably early. He’s a joy to play with, eagerly retrieving and dropping the ball back for another round. This playful enthusiasm and quick learning ability make him such a fun companion.

As Duke has grown, each day he looks a little bit more mature, yet he retains that youthful spark. He’s a sweet, incredibly affectionate dog who embraces life with boundless energy. More than anything, he adores his big brother, Einstein. Their bond is a heartwarming sight, full of playful antics, shared naps, and mutual comfort. Watching them interact truly highlights the joy and richness that two dogs bring to a home.
Crafting the Perfect Birthday Treat: The Irresistible Blend of Peanut Butter and Bacon
No dog birthday in our home would be complete without a batch of homemade dog treats. It’s a tradition we cherish, knowing exactly what ingredients go into our furry friends’ snacks and avoiding any unwanted additives or preservatives. For Duke’s first birthday, I wanted to try something new and utterly irresistible. The answer was clear: bacon! What dog doesn’t go absolutely wild for bacon? And, of course, a dash of peanut butter, a staple favorite for many canines. While Duke hadn’t been introduced to peanut butter before, Einstein’s unwavering adoration for it made me confident it would be a huge hit.

Making homemade treats isn’t just about the ingredients; it’s about the love that goes into them. These Peanut Butter-Bacon Dog Treats are designed to be both delicious and relatively healthy, providing a wholesome reward for your canine companion. The combination of savory bacon, creamy peanut butter, and hearty oats creates a scent and flavor profile that’s simply irresistible to most dogs. Plus, the process is straightforward, allowing you to whip up a batch of these delectable snacks in no time.
Even for a dog who typically couldn’t be bothered with food, Duke’s reaction to these treats was exceptional. As I was photographing them, something he usually ignores entirely, he hovered around the table with an intensity I’d never seen before. I’m utterly convinced he knew these special creations were just for him. When it was time to taste, he gobbled up his treat with gusto, meticulously cleaning up every last crumb. It was a heartwarming sight, confirming that these homemade delights were indeed the perfect way to celebrate his fabulous first birthday.

Beyond the joy of the birthday celebration, these treats offer a fantastic way to bond with your pet and ensure they’re consuming wholesome, natural ingredients. Store-bought treats often contain fillers, artificial flavors, and preservatives that many pet owners prefer to avoid. By making your own, you control every element, tailoring the recipe to your dog’s preferences and any dietary needs they might have. It’s a small effort that yields big rewards in terms of your dog’s health and happiness.

Pin
Ingredients
- 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (120 g) whole wheat flour
- 1 cup (81 g) traditional rolled oats
- 3 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled
- 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
- ½ cup (129 g) creamy peanut butter
- ¼ cup (84.75 g) honey
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
-
In a small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, oats and bacon.
-
In a medium bowl, whisk together the beef broth, peanut butter, honey and coconut oil. Add the dry ingredients to the bowl and mix together using a rubber spatula until no pockets of flour remain.
-
Turn the mixture out onto a well-floured surface. Dust the mixture with flour and knead gently until a soft dough forms and is no longer sticky. Roll or pat the dough out to about ½-inch thickness. Cut out shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet. The treats will not spread, so you can place them pretty close together (without touching).
-
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until lightly browned and firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving. The treats can be stored at room temperature for up to 1 week.
