Kentucky Derby Pie Cupcakes: A Taste of Tradition in Every Bite
As spring unfurls its vibrant colors, two beloved celebrations often converge on the calendar: the iconic Kentucky Derby and the festive Cinco de Mayo. This delightful proximity presents a joyful dilemma for hosts and revelers alike. Do you lean into the minty freshness of a julep or the zesty kick of a margarita? Adorn your head with a grand Derby hat or a colorful sombrero? Serve delicate tea sandwiches or dive into a platter of chips, salsa, and guacamole? Our advice? Embrace the best of both worlds! When it comes to desserts, why choose when you can savor a truly exceptional treat that honors one of these great traditions with a convenient, modern twist.
A few years ago, we shared our rendition of the classic Kentucky Derby Pie – a decadent dessert often enjoyed during the “Run for the Roses.” This legendary pie, a rich cousin to the traditional pecan pie, substitutes walnuts for pecans and is generously studded with chocolate chips and, crucially, a hearty splash of bourbon. Encased in a flaky pie crust and crowned with a dollop of whipped cream, it’s a dessert that consistently steals the show at any Derby watch party. This year, we’ve reimagined this classic into a delightful, portable format: Kentucky Derby Pie Cupcakes. These individual servings pack all the beloved flavors of the original pie, infused with that unmistakable bourbon warmth, making them perfect for sharing.

The Allure of Kentucky Derby Pie: History and Flavor
The Kentucky Derby Pie, often simply called “Derby Pie,” holds a special place in Southern culinary tradition, particularly during the first Saturday in May when the eyes of the world turn to Churchill Downs. While the name “Derby Pie” is trademarked, variations of this chocolate, walnut, and bourbon-infused tart have graced countless tables across Kentucky and beyond. Its rich, gooey filling, reminiscent of a pecan pie but with the distinctive nuttiness of walnuts and the depth of chocolate, is elevated by the smoky, sweet notes of bourbon. This combination creates a truly indulgent experience that is both comforting and sophisticated. The pie’s popularity stems not only from its delicious flavor profile but also from its association with the grandeur and excitement of the Kentucky Derby itself, making it an integral part of race day festivities.
Our Kentucky Derby Pie Cupcakes are crafted to capture this exact essence. Each cupcake begins with a moist, tender butter-bourbon cake batter, akin to a sophisticated rum cake but featuring the unique character of bourbon. This luxurious batter is generously folded with finely chopped walnuts, providing a delightful textural contrast, and rich semi-sweet chocolate chips that melt into pockets of chocolatey goodness. The result is a cake that is deeply flavorful, with a complex sweetness that hints at caramel and vanilla, all balanced by the subtle warmth of the bourbon.

Elevating the Flavor: Bourbon Buttercream and Glaze
Once baked to golden perfection and allowed to cool, these cupcakes receive a luxurious finishing touch. A cloud of velvety vanilla-bourbon buttercream frosting crowns each cupcake, offering a sweet, creamy counterpoint to the rich cake. The bourbon in the frosting echoes the flavors within the cake, creating a harmonious and intensely satisfying experience. But the indulgence doesn’t stop there. A glistening bourbon-butter glaze is artfully drizzled over the frosting, adding another layer of moisture, sweetness, and that signature bourbon kick. This glaze seeps slightly into the frosting and cake, infusing every bite with an extra burst of flavor.
To complete the authentic Derby Pie experience, each cupcake is then garnished with additional chopped walnuts and a scattering of mini chocolate chips. These toppings not only enhance the visual appeal but also provide a delightful crunch and an extra dose of rich chocolate flavor. For those who truly wish to amplify the bourbon experience, an optional step involves brushing a small amount of bourbon directly onto the warm cupcakes as they emerge from the oven. This creates a deeply infused cupcake that truly sings with the spirit of Kentucky. Conversely, for those who prefer to enjoy these treats without alcohol, simply omitting the bourbon from all steps yields an equally delicious and moist cupcake, requiring no further adjustments.
Why Choose Cupcakes Over Pie for Your Derby Party?
While a classic pie is undoubtedly magnificent, turning this beloved dessert into cupcakes offers several distinct advantages, especially for social gatherings like a Kentucky Derby party:
- Portability and Convenience: Cupcakes are inherently easy to transport, whether you’re bringing them to a friend’s house or simply moving them from kitchen to serving table. No need for pie servers or plates; guests can simply grab and go.
- Perfect Portions: Each cupcake is a perfectly sized individual dessert, eliminating the need for slicing and ensuring even distribution. This makes serving a breeze and reduces mess.
- Shareability: Cupcakes are designed for sharing. They encourage mingling and make it easy for guests to enjoy a sweet treat without committing to a large slice of pie.
- Visual Appeal: A platter of beautifully decorated cupcakes is undeniably eye-catching and festive, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of any party.
- Less Waste: Individual portions often lead to less waste, as guests are more likely to finish a single cupcake than a potentially too-large slice of pie.
The resulting Kentucky Derby Pie Cupcakes are a testament to moist texture, robust flavor, and a satisfying bourbon “punch.” They are undeniably easier to transport and serve than a traditional pie, and they are guaranteed to be a hit with all your Derby-watching friends and family. Imagine your guests delighting in these miniature masterpieces, each bite a perfect blend of rich cake, creamy frosting, and spirited glaze. They are more than just a dessert; they are a conversation starter, a celebratory symbol, and a genuinely memorable treat.

Ingredients
For the Cupcakes:
- 1½ cups (187.5 g) cake flour
- ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon (0.25 teaspoon) baking soda
- ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) kosher salt
- ¾ cup (87.75 g) chopped walnuts
- ½ cup (90 g) semisweet mini chocolate chips
- ½ cup (120 ml) buttermilk, at room temperature
- 2 tablespoons bourbon
- ½ cup (113.5 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
- ¼ cup (55 g) light brown sugar
- 2 eggs, at room temperature
For the Vanilla-Bourbon Frosting:
- 1 cup (227 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 2½ cups (300 g) powdered sugar
- Pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon bourbon
For the Butter-Bourbon Glaze:
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon bourbon
Instructions
-
Make the Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a standard 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners; set aside.
-
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisk in the salt, walnuts, and chocolate chips; set aside.
-
In a separate measuring cup, whisk together the buttermilk and bourbon; set aside.
-
Using an electric mixer, cream together the butter and both sugars on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl, reduce the speed to low, and add the eggs, one at a time, beating each until completely incorporated before adding the next, scraping down the bowl between additions.
-
Add the flour mixture in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk mixture in two additions, mixing each step until just barely combined. Stop mixing after the last flour addition when there is still a little flour left in the batter. Finish mixing by hand using a rubber spatula to ensure no dry spots remain.
-
Fill the cupcake liners about ¾ full. Bake until light golden brown and a thin knife inserted into the center comes out clean, approximately 18 to 20 minutes. Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then remove them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
-
Make the Frosting: Using the wire whisk attachment of your stand mixer, whip the butter on medium-high speed for 5 minutes, stopping to scrape the bowl once or twice. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the powdered sugar. Once all of the powdered sugar is incorporated, add the vanilla extract and bourbon, mixing until fully combined. Whip at medium-high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes, scraping the bowl as needed to ensure everything is well mixed.
-
Make the Butter-Bourbon Glaze: Place the butter, sugar, and bourbon in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 1 minute, or until the sugar is completely dissolved. Stir well and allow to sit for about 15 minutes to allow the glaze to thicken slightly to a pourable consistency.
-
Decorate the Cupcakes: Once the cupcakes are completely cooled, pipe an even amount of frosting onto each one. Drizzle a spoonful of the butter-bourbon glaze over each frosted cupcake. Finally, sprinkle with some chopped walnuts and mini chocolate chips for added texture and flavor. Leftover cupcakes can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, maintaining their delicious flavor and moisture.
Notes
Notes:
- If you wish to make these cupcakes without the alcohol, you can easily omit the bourbon from the recipe. Simply replace the bourbon in the cake batter and butter glaze with an additional 1½ teaspoons of vanilla extract for a delightful, alcohol-free version.
