Hearty Italian-Style Pastitsio: A Decadent Baked Pasta Casserole
There’s nothing quite like a comforting baked pasta dish to bring warmth and joy to the dinner table. And when that dish is an Italian-style pastitsio, you know you’re in for a truly special treat. This recipe takes inspiration from the beloved Greek classic and transforms it into an irresistible Italian masterpiece, featuring rich layers of spaghetti, a savory Italian sausage meat sauce, a luscious creamy cheese layer, and a golden mozzarella topping. It’s a decadent, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying meal that’s perfect for Sunday dinners, entertaining guests, or simply indulging in a truly memorable comfort food experience.

From Aegean Shores to Italian Kitchens: The Inspiration Behind This Dish
For years, traditional Greek pastitsio has held a revered spot on my culinary bucket list. When I finally embarked on making it last October, the results were met with resounding acclaim. For those unfamiliar, authentic Greek pastitsio is a deeply satisfying baked pasta dish, often described as a Greek lasagna. It typically consists of thick pasta noodles, such as bucatini or penne, mixed with eggs and sometimes cheese, a robust tomato-based meat sauce (often lamb, spiced with cinnamon and cloves), and a generous blanket of creamy béchamel sauce, all baked until golden and bubbling. It is, without a doubt, a truly amazing culinary creation.
My experience with the traditional version left me craving more, but also pondering a delicious question: how could I adapt this layered marvel to fit our cherished Italian Sunday dinner traditions? The answer lay in giving it a distinctly Italian makeover. This ambition wasn’t driven by a “problem” with the original, but rather an overwhelming desire to explore new flavor possibilities and create a dish that resonated with the familiar tastes of Italian cuisine. The result? A massive hit that proved to be even simpler to assemble than its Greek cousin, offering a win-win in terms of both flavor and convenience.

What Makes This Italian-Style Pastitsio Uniquely Delicious?
While borrowing the concept of layered baked pasta, our Italian-style pastitsio distinguishes itself with several key modifications that infuse it with classic Italian flavors and textures. The transformation begins with the pasta itself. Instead of the larger penne typically found in Greek pastitsio, we opt for delicate spaghetti. Its thinner strands create a wonderfully cohesive and tender base when baked, perfectly absorbing the rich flavors of the other layers.
Next, the meat layer undergoes a significant Italian evolution. In place of the spiced lamb tomato sauce, we craft a hearty Italian sausage meat sauce. Using sweet Italian sausage brings a beautifully balanced savory flavor with subtle fennel notes that are characteristic of Italian cooking. To add an extra touch of creamy richness and a delightful pink hue, we stir in a splash of heavy cream, transforming the meat sauce into something truly special.
The traditional béchamel sauce, a cornerstone of Greek pastitsio, is reimagined into a simpler, yet equally decadent, creamy cheese layer. For this, we bypass a lengthy roux-based sauce and instead combine soft cream cheese and wholesome cottage cheese. When gently heated and stirred, these two cheeses melt together to form an incredibly smooth, tangy, and rich topping for the pasta, providing a luxurious counterpoint to the robust meat sauce. Finally, to crown this culinary masterpiece, we layer on generous slices of fresh mozzarella, which melts into a gooey, irresistible blanket, and scatter fresh basil, whose vibrant aroma and taste elevate every bite.

A Rich, Rewarding Dish for Special Moments
If the description of these luscious layers suggests a truly rich dish, you are absolutely correct! This Italian-style pastitsio is undeniably hearty and indulgent. It’s not the kind of meal you’d typically prepare every weeknight, but it is an absolutely phenomenal choice for special occasions, celebratory Sunday dinners, or when you’re hosting company. Its impressive presentation and complex flavors make it a showstopper that’s sure to impress. It functions wonderfully as an all-in-one meal, requiring only a simple tossed salad and a loaf of crusty Italian bread to complete a perfectly balanced and immensely satisfying feast.
I am absolutely thrilled to add this baked pasta recipe to my growing collection. There’s something inherently comforting and deeply satisfying about a casserole that combines tender pasta, savory meat, and an abundance of melted cheese. This Italian Pastitsio truly embodies the essence of comfort food, bringing warmth, flavor, and a touch of homemade magic to any gathering.

Ingredients
For the Pasta Layer:
- 1 pound (453.59 g) spaghetti
- 4 eggs
- 4 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
- ½ cup (50 g) grated Parmesan cheese
- ½ cup (113.5 g) salted butter, cut into small cubes
For the Cream Layer:
- 8 ounces (226.8 g) cottage cheese
- 8 ounces (226.8 g) cream cheese, at room temperature
For the Meat Sauce Layer:
- 1 pound (453.59 g) ground sweet Italian sausage
- 3 cups (735 ml) pasta sauce (your favorite homemade or store-bought)
- ¼ cup (59.5 ml) heavy whipping cream
For the Topping:
- 16 ounces (453.59 g) fresh mozzarella cheese, drained, blotted dry and sliced
- 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Cook the spaghetti to al dente as directed on the package. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, parsley, and Parmesan cheese. Drain the spaghetti thoroughly, and return it to the hot pot. Add the butter and the egg mixture to the spaghetti, stirring quickly with a wooden spoon until the pasta is evenly coated and the eggs have formed a light sauce, ensuring they don’t scramble. Pour the spaghetti into the prepared baking dish and smooth it into an even layer.
- Add the cottage cheese and cream cheese to the now-empty pot (off the heat) and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the cream cheese is fully melted and the mixture is completely smooth and combined. Pour this creamy cheese mixture evenly over the spaghetti layer in the pan.
- Heat a medium skillet over medium heat and brown the Italian sausage, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks until it’s no longer pink in the middle. Remove the sausage from the heat, use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked sausage to the pot that held the cheese mixture, leaving any excess grease behind in the skillet. Stir in the pasta sauce and heavy cream until well combined. Spread this flavorful meat sauce evenly over the cream cheese layer in the baking dish.
- Carefully arrange the slices of fresh mozzarella over the top of the sausage layer, ensuring good coverage. Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling around the edges and the cheese topping is melted and lightly golden brown. Once baked, remove from the oven and sprinkle generously with the thinly sliced fresh basil. Allow the pastitsio to rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing and serving. This resting period is crucial for the layers to set, making it easier to serve neat portions.
