Embrace Autumn’s Sweetness: Irresistible Pumpkin Whoopie Pies with Maple Cream Cheese Filling
As the leaves begin to turn and a crispness fills the air, there’s an undeniable shift in our culinary inclinations. For many, September ushers in a passion for all things apple, from pies to crisps. But as the month draws to a close, a new king takes the throne in the kitchen: the humble, yet versatile, pumpkin. October, for us, is synonymous with pumpkin season. While Thanksgiving often claims the spotlight for pumpkin pie, our excitement for this vibrant squash begins much earlier. After all, October brings Halloween, a time for carving cheerful (or spooky) jack-o’-lanterns and roasting their delicious seeds. More importantly, it brings the annual viewing of beloved fall classics like “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” There’s nothing quite like cozying up with a seasonal treat during these timeless holiday specials, whether it’s Rudolph (the original!), Christmas Vacation, Elf, or A Christmas Story. With October just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to dive into fall baking with these utterly delightful Pumpkin Whoopie Pies!
The Iconic Whoopie Pie: A Delicious Debate
If you’re new to the world of whoopie pies, prepare for a treat. These charming desserts are essentially soft, cake-like cookies sandwiched together with a rich, creamy filling, creating a delightful bite of pure comfort. They’re often described as a cross between a cookie and a cake, offering the best of both worlds. The term “whoopie pie” itself carries a fun, nostalgic ring, said to originate from farmers and bakers exclaiming “Whoopie!” upon finding these delicious creations in their lunch pails.
However, depending on where you grew up, you might know them by a different name. In certain regions, particularly my hometown of Pittsburgh, these delicious treats are affectionately called ‘gobs’. It’s a regional quirk, a cherished local term that speaks to the unique culinary tapestry of different areas. While the name might spark a friendly debate, the essence remains the same: two tender, cake-like rounds embracing a generous dollop of luscious filling. Whether you call them whoopie pies or gobs, one thing is universally true: they are incredibly delicious and utterly essential for your fall baking repertoire. Don’t let the nomenclature conundrum deter you from experiencing this autumnal bliss. Call them what you will, but please, make and eat these!
Why These Pumpkin Whoopie Pies Are Your New Fall Favorite
These aren’t just any pumpkin cookies; they are an experience, a symphony of autumnal flavors and textures that will transport you straight to a cozy fall day. This recipe, shared with me years ago by a dear colleague, has become a cherished staple in my kitchen, and it’s sure to become one in yours too.
Perfectly Spiced Pumpkin Cakes
The cookie-cakes themselves are the star of the show. Imagine soft, incredibly moist rounds, bursting with the warm, inviting spices of the season. Each bite delivers a harmonious blend of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg, perfectly balanced to evoke that quintessential fall feeling. They are light, yet substantial, with a tender crumb that practically melts in your mouth. As these bake, your entire home will be enveloped in an aroma reminiscent of Thanksgiving morning, a fragrant promise of the deliciousness to come. The subtle crack that appears on top of the cookies as they bake is a tell-tale sign of their perfection, indicating a perfectly set exterior with a wonderfully soft interior.
Dreamy Maple Cream Cheese Filling
What truly elevates these pumpkin whoopie pies is their exquisite maple cream cheese filling. This isn’t just any frosting; it’s a creamy, tangy, and subtly sweet masterpiece that perfectly complements the spiced pumpkin cakes. The richness of cream cheese is beautifully cut by a hint of pure maple syrup, adding an earthy sweetness that marries flawlessly with the pumpkin’s warmth. A touch of vanilla extract rounds out the flavors, creating a filling that is both luxurious and comforting. The smooth, velvety texture of the filling provides a wonderful contrast to the soft cake rounds, making each assembled whoopie pie a perfectly balanced bite of heaven. This filling is so good, you might find yourself sneaking a spoonful (or two!) straight from the bowl.
Celebrating Fall Moments with Every Bite
These pumpkin whoopie pies are more than just a dessert; they are a vessel for creating cherished fall memories. They are the ideal accompaniment for any autumn occasion, from casual family dinners to festive Halloween gatherings. Imagine serving these at your annual Halloween party, their vibrant fall colors and inviting aroma welcoming guests. Or picture a quiet evening curled up on the couch, watching “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” or another beloved holiday special, with a warm mug of cider in one hand and a soft, spiced whoopie pie in the other. Their portability also makes them perfect for school lunchboxes, office potlucks, or as a thoughtful homemade gift for friends and neighbors.
They bring a sense of nostalgia and comfort, reminding us of simpler times and the joy of seasonal traditions. These treats embody the spirit of autumn, making every bite a celebration of pumpkin patches, crisp air, and cozy moments. Don’t just make them; savor them, and let them become a part of your own fall traditions. The combination of classic fall spices with the unique texture of whoopie pies makes this recipe an outstanding choice for anyone looking to truly embrace the bounty of the season.
Essential Tips for Baking Success
Achieving whoopie pie perfection is simpler than you might think, especially with a few key tips:
- **Room Temperature Ingredients:** For both the whoopie pie batter and the cream cheese filling, ensuring your eggs, butter, and cream cheese are at room temperature is crucial. This allows for smoother mixing and a more uniform texture in your final product.
- **Don’t Overmix:** When combining the wet and dry ingredients for the whoopie pies, mix just until combined. Overmixing can lead to tough cookies, and we’re aiming for that delightfully soft, cake-like crumb.
- **Consistent Scooping:** Use a small cookie scoop or a measuring spoon to ensure each whoopie pie round is roughly the same size. This promotes even baking and makes assembly much easier, resulting in perfectly matched pairs.
- **Proper Spacing:** Give your whoopie pie dough plenty of space on the baking sheet. They will spread slightly, and you don’t want them to merge into one giant pumpkin blob. About one inch apart is usually sufficient.
- **Cool Completely:** Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to whoopie pies. Ensure your pumpkin cookies are completely cooled before attempting to fill them. A warm cookie will melt the luscious cream cheese filling, leading to a messy (though still delicious) situation.
- **Chilling After Assembly:** Once assembled, pop your whoopie pies into the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. This firms up the maple cream cheese filling, making them easier to handle and enhancing their overall texture and stability.
Following these simple guidelines will help you create whoopie pies that are not only delicious but also beautiful to behold.

Ingredients
For the Whoopie Pies:
- 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger
- ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) ground nutmeg
- 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (220 g) dark brown sugar
- 1 cup (218 ml) canola or vegetable oil
- 3 cups (735 g) chilled pumpkin puree, canned pumpkin
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Maple-Cream Cheese Filling:
- 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar
- 8 ounces (226.8 g) cream cheese, at room temperature
- 4 ounces (113.4 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature, (½ cup )
- 3 tablespoons maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
-
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
-
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger and nutmeg. Set aside.
-
3. In a separate bowl, whisk the granulated sugar, the dark brown sugar, and the oil together. Add the pumpkin puree and whisk to combine thoroughly. Add the eggs and vanilla and whisk until combined.
-
4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the pumpkin mixture and whisk until completely combined.
-
5. Use a small cookie scoop or a large spoon to drop a rounded, heaping tablespoon of the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, about 1 inch apart.
-
6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, making sure that the cookies are just starting to crack on top and a toothpick inserted into the center of a cookie comes out clean. The cookies should be firm when touched. Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool completely on a cooling rack.
-
7. To make the filling, beat the butter on medium speed until smooth with no visible lumps, about 3 minutes. Add the cream cheese and beat until smooth and combined, about 2 minutes. Add the powdered sugar a little at a time, then add the maple syrup and vanilla and beat until smooth.
-
8. To assemble the whoopie pies: Turn half of the cooled cookies upside down. Pipe or spoon the filling (about a tablespoon) onto that half. Place another cookie, flat side down, on top of the filling. Press down slightly so that the filling spread to the edges of the cookie. Repeat until all the cookies are used. Put the whoopie pies in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to firm before serving.
