Delicious Honey Fig Scones, freshly baked and golden brown

Honey Fig Scones: A Perfect Blend of Sweetness and Comfort

Scones hold a special place in the hearts of many, and certainly in mine. Their effortless preparation, incredible versatility, and undeniable deliciousness make them a timeless classic in the baking world. From adapting them with virtually any flavor profile to incorporating a wide array of add-ins, scones offer endless possibilities for culinary creativity. My journey with baking began with the humble Dark Chocolate Chip Scones, a recipe I mastered early on and made frequently. These quickly became a family favorite, so much so that even after years of exploring countless other desserts, my mom consistently requests them for her birthday. This speaks volumes about the comforting appeal of a well-made scone.

Almost a year ago, I shared a recipe for Blueberry Buttermilk Scones, which prompted a kind reader to share some of her personal scone favorites. Among them was this exquisite Honey Fig Scones recipe. It immediately captured my imagination, and I’ve regretted not trying it sooner. Now that I have, I can confidently say these scones are destined to become a beloved staple in my kitchen, especially as the cooler autumn and winter months roll in. If you, like me, appreciate the simple elegance of scones, the hearty texture of oats, and the unique sweetness of figs, then this recipe is an absolute must-try. You truly cannot go wrong with this delightful combination.

The Simplicity and Appeal of Homemade Scones

One of the greatest joys of making scones is their straightforward nature. These Honey Fig Scones are no exception; they come together with remarkable ease, requiring just a couple of mixing bowls, a whisk, and a spatula. In approximately 45 minutes, from mixing the ingredients to pulling them hot and fragrant from the oven, you can have a batch of these delectable treats ready to enjoy. This makes them perfect for a spontaneous breakfast, a last-minute brunch addition, or a comforting afternoon snack.

The texture of these scones is particularly noteworthy, thanks to the addition of old-fashioned rolled oats. They lend a delightful chewiness and a satisfying heartiness that distinguishes them from more traditional scone recipes. The flavor profile is subtly sweet and incredibly inviting, with honey providing a mellow, comforting base. And for those who adore figs, as I do, every bite offers delightful pockets of chopped figs, bursting with their distinct, sweet earthiness. Whether you opt for fresh, seasonal figs or the convenience of dried figs, the result is equally enchanting. Both options infuse the scones with that unmistakable fig flavor, making them versatile for any time of year.

Baking Tips for Perfect Scones: The Importance of an Oven Thermometer

As with any baking endeavor, precision is key to achieving optimal results. On my first attempt with these Honey Fig Scones, I made a small oversight: I neglected to double-check my oven thermometer. Consequently, they browned a bit more than intended and spread a little extra, though they were still incredibly tasty. This experience served as an excellent reminder of just how crucial an accurate oven thermometer is for consistent baking. Ovens can often run hotter or cooler than their display indicates, and a simple, inexpensive oven thermometer can be a baker’s best friend, ensuring your treats bake at the correct temperature for the perfect golden hue and tender crumb.

For scones, specifically, maintaining the right oven temperature helps them rise beautifully and achieve that desirable light and fluffy interior with a crisp exterior. Over-baking can lead to dry scones, while under-baking can result in a doughy texture. So, take a moment to verify your oven’s temperature; it truly makes all the difference.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (40.5 g) old-fashioned rolled oats, not quick-cooking oats
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) salt
  • ½ teaspoon (0.5 teaspoon) ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup (54.5 ml) canola or vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (84.75 ml) honey
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 cup (50 g) diced figs, fresh or dried

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and canola or vegetable oil together. Add the honey and mix until thoroughly combined. Pour this liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and gently fold together with a rubber spatula until just combined. Add the heavy cream and mix until fully incorporated (the dough will be somewhat wet at this stage). In a small bowl, cover the diced figs with the granulated sugar, then gently fold them into the scone dough.
  4. On a well-floured surface, and dusting the top of the dough with a little more flour to prevent sticking, pat the dough out into a 7-inch (18 cm) circle. Using a sharp knife or a bench scraper, cut the circle into 8 equal triangles. Carefully place these triangles on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them out slightly.
  5. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the scones are lightly golden brown on top and cooked through. Serve these delightful Honey Fig Scones warm or at room temperature. While they are undeniably best enjoyed on the day they are made, any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.

Beyond the Recipe: Customizing Your Scones

While this Honey Fig Scones recipe is perfect as is, the beauty of scones lies in their adaptability. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different flavor combinations or additional mix-ins to suit your taste or the season. Consider adding a touch of orange zest to the dough for a bright, citrusy note that beautifully complements the figs and honey. A sprinkle of chopped walnuts or pecans could provide an extra layer of crunch and nutty flavor. For a richer finish, a simple honey glaze drizzled over the warm scones would elevate them to an even more decadent treat.

The choice between fresh and dried figs also offers a nuanced experience. Fresh figs, when in season, bring a juicy sweetness and a slightly different texture to the scones. Dried figs, on the other hand, provide a more concentrated sweetness and a chewy bite, making them a fantastic option when fresh produce is unavailable. Both are delicious, so feel free to use what you have on hand or what you prefer. This flexibility ensures you can enjoy these delightful scones any time of the year, making them a truly versatile addition to your baking repertoire.

Serving Suggestions for Your Honey Fig Scones

These Honey Fig Scones are truly versatile and can be enjoyed in a multitude of ways. For a classic British tea experience, serve them warm with a dollop of clotted cream and a spoonful of fig jam (if you can find it!) or your favorite fruit preserve. They are, of course, absolutely divine on their own, especially fresh out of the oven, allowing the subtle honey and fig flavors to shine through. Pair them with a strong cup of coffee or a comforting mug of tea for a perfect breakfast or an indulgent afternoon pick-me-up.

For a brunch spread, these scones make an excellent addition alongside fresh fruit, yogurt, and other pastries. Their unique flavor profile sets them apart and is sure to impress your guests. Leftovers, if any, can be gently reheated in a toaster oven for a few minutes to regain some of their freshly baked warmth and tenderness. They also freeze well; simply wrap them individually in plastic wrap and then in foil, and thaw or reheat as needed. This makes them a great make-ahead option for busy mornings or unexpected guests.

Ultimately, these Honey Fig Scones are more than just a recipe; they are an invitation to enjoy the simple pleasures of home baking. Their ease of preparation, combined with their comforting flavors and satisfying texture, guarantees they’ll become a cherished part of your culinary traditions. So, gather your ingredients, preheat your oven, and prepare to fall in love with these wonderfully wholesome and sweet treats.
