A Decade of Deliciousness: Celebrating 10 Years of Brown Eyed Baker
This month marks an incredible milestone for Brown Eyed Baker: its TENTH birthday! It’s truly mind-blowing to reflect on how much has transpired since I first hit “publish” on my Italian Wedding Soup recipe on February 11, 2007. That day feels like a lifetime ago, and in many profound ways, it truly was a different era.
Over the past ten years, my life has undergone a remarkable transformation. I’ve moved three times, welcomed two heartwarming dogs into my family (and heartbreakingly said goodbye to one of them), exchanged vows with my wonderful husband, and become a mother to two beautiful boys who illuminate every single one of my days. It’s been an extraordinary adventure, intertwined deeply with the growth of this blog, and I thought you’d enjoy a journey back through time with me, as we also glance forward to what’s next.
The Genesis: A Simpler Digital World

When I embarked on the Brown Eyed Baker journey, I was residing outside of Cleveland, Ohio, a few hours from Pittsburgh, working a rather uninspiring day job. My days often involved extensive web surfing, which eventually led me to stumble upon a handful of nascent food blogs. Seriously, there were maybe two or three prominent ones. Blogging, as we know it today, was barely a concept back then. We’re talking about a time when customizing your MySpace page was the pinnacle of online self-expression. MySpace, people – not even Facebook! The term “social media” had yet to be coined, and I certainly wasn’t aware of all-encompassing platforms like Squarespace, which now empower individuals to build their online presence with unprecedented ease.
Imagine launching a blog in a digital landscape where Facebook was exclusive to college students, and Twitter and Instagram simply didn’t exist. Honestly, it was a sublime experience. It was all about sharing (often subpar) photos and (brief) write-ups about the food I was passionately creating and enjoying. Connection happened in nascent internet forums, a community of individuals just beginning to explore their love for cooking and baking. The pressure was significantly lower, allowing me to blog purely “for the love of the game”—or, more accurately, “for the love of food.” This authentic approach fostered genuine connections and allowed creativity to flourish without the constant demands of algorithms or viral trends.
To truly grasp just how long ago I started Brown Eyed Baker, consider these personal benchmarks: it was a mere two weeks before I brought Einstein home as a puppy, I was a youthful 26 years old (twenty-six, good Lord, I was just a baby!), my husband and I wouldn’t even start dating for another year and a half, and it would be nearly four more years before Brown Eyed Baker would transition from a beloved hobby to my full-time profession. It was a gradual evolution, built on passion and persistence.
The Leap to Full-Time Blogging: A Dream Realized

While nurturing Brown Eyed Baker, I continued my role as a marketing analyst. My evenings and weekends were a whirlwind of baking, food styling, photographing, writing, engaging with a growing readership, and meticulously planning my exit strategy from my “regular” job. I immersed myself in learning the intricacies of social media, digital marketing, and content creation, all while building a robust foundation for what I hoped would become my full-time career. This period required immense dedication, often blurring the lines between work and leisure, but the sheer joy I derived from blogging fueled every effort.
In December 2010, after nearly four years of dedicated effort, I finally bid farewell to my corporate job. It was a momentous decision, one I haven’t regretted for a single second since. Looking back, this slow and steady progress probably earned me the “Tortoise Badge” (a nod to my son Joseph, who’s watching Hey Duggee behind me and making me think of badges!). For anyone contemplating launching a blog to replace their full-time employment today, the landscape is certainly more supportive than it was then, but it’s still far from an overnight success story. It demands considerable blood, sweat, and tears, and an unwavering commitment to your craft.
The journey would have been significantly smoother if I had access to a comprehensive platform like Squarespace in those early days. Imagine having all the essential tools for blogging – domains, hosting, publishing capabilities, and intuitive design interfaces – consolidated in one user-friendly place. I spent countless hours wrestling with technical issues that are now seamlessly handled by such integrated platforms, allowing creators to focus purely on content creation and community building.

My transition into full-time blogging predated the widespread acceptance of blogs as legitimate businesses. When my mom proudly told people I was a “food blogger,” she inevitably faced the quizzical follow-up: “But how does she make money?!” I’m pretty sure she had to answer that question approximately “eleventy billion” times. (Sorry, Mom, and thank you for your patience!) This was a common hurdle for early digital entrepreneurs, as the concept of monetizing online content was still in its infancy. Educating others about the value and viability of this new profession was an ongoing task.
Suffice it to say, things have transformed dramatically since then. Today, there are literally millions of food blogs, and food blogging has evolved into a thriving, multi-faceted industry. Countless individuals are now making a fulfilling living by sharing their recipes, culinary expertise, and lifestyle content online. Social media has exploded, becoming an indispensable tool for content creators to reach vast audiences. However, this growth also means increased competition. If you’re among the fortunate few who call this your profession, you understand that in such a saturated market, you must constantly hustle, innovate, and maintain authenticity to stand out from the crowd.
Embracing New Technology and Streamlined Solutions
In the nascent stages of Brown Eyed Baker, I began on the Blogger platform before making the strategic move to WordPress, which I still utilize today. Back then, if you were a new blogger operating on a limited budget, your primary options were either to use a free, often restrictive, theme or to embark on the challenging journey of teaching yourself HTML and CSS. I distinctly remember spending the better part of the summer of 2010 attempting to customize a theme without completely breaking my entire site – a true trial by fire! This required a significant investment of time and mental energy that could have been better spent on content creation.
Fortunately, the explosion of the blogging community has led to the proliferation of countless businesses dedicated to supporting online creators. Squarespace has become particularly popular with modern bloggers, offering a truly comprehensive, one-stop-shop solution. It makes getting a gorgeous, professional website up and running with minimal effort incredibly easy. Had such a platform existed during the summer of 2010, I would have undoubtedly enjoyed far more vitamin D and far fewer coding headaches!

A couple of years ago, I shared insights on how to start a food blog. If you’re considering entering the dynamic world of blogging, I encourage you to read that post and then absolutely explore Squarespace as an invaluable resource. With Squarespace, you can effortlessly secure your domain name, customize your site’s design to reflect your unique brand, publish delicious recipes, and even set up a fully functional online store. The days of needing to hire five different experts or juggle multiple companies to achieve all of this are thankfully behind us. This streamlined approach allows aspiring bloggers to channel their energy into what truly matters: creating engaging content and connecting with their audience.
Moreover, Squarespace provides 24/7 support via email and live chat, which is music to the ears of someone like me who genuinely loathes talking on the phone. I vividly recall spending seven agonizing hours on the phone with tech support on a Friday night in 2010 because my entire site was down due to a broken database. The ability to have everything necessary for my site to run smoothly, all under one roof, and with such accessible and efficient support, is truly an amazing advancement. As someone who was a late adopter of Twitter and Instagram, and never even ventured into Snapchat, I consider myself a bit of an “old soul” when it comes to technology. I genuinely appreciate handing the reins over to platforms and people who are far more adept at managing the technical complexities than I am!
Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

Ten years, come and gone – it’s truly unbelievable how quickly time flies. The digital landscape is ever-evolving, and it will be incredibly interesting to observe how technology, social media trends, and the entire blogging ecosystem continue to transform over the next decade. One thing remains constant: I plan to still be right here, passionately sharing the foods I love, exploring new culinary adventures, and documenting the beautiful journey of my ever-changing family. This blog has become a central part of my life, a living diary of both recipes and milestones.
As we embark on this next chapter, I’d love to hear from you. Is there anything specific you’re hoping to see moving forward? Any recipes you’re absolutely dying to make, new cooking challenges you’d like me to tackle, or perhaps more insights into family life? Please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts and suggestions in the comments below. Your feedback is invaluable and helps shape the future direction of Brown Eyed Baker.
There is absolutely no way I could have achieved what I have over the past ten years without each and every one of you, my incredible readers, who consistently return week after week to share in my love for food, family, and stories. So, from the bottom of my heart, a great big THANK YOU to all of you. You have allowed me to pursue this passion project, which has blossomed into my dream job, while simultaneously enjoying precious time with my boys, who are growing up far too fast. Your unwavering support, engagement, and enthusiasm have collectively made Brown Eyed Baker what it is today, and for that, I am eternally grateful.
