  • 1¼ cups buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon milk

For the Frosting:

  • 20 tablespoons unsalted butter, at cool room temperature
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ¾ cup Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • ¾ cup light corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, melted and cooled slightly

Instructions

  • Make the Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans; set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
